Sidewalk Cinema No. 17: Battleship

Mario and Dave decide to take one for the team and watch Battleship, the movie based on a board game that stars Taylor “Gambit” Kitsch, Liam “I sleep better on piles of money” Neeson, Ri-”umbrella-ella“-hanna, Alexander “No not the quirky scientist, the other one” Skarsgård, Brooklyn “my eyes are up here” Decker and a lot of CGI.

Expectations were pretty low for this one, but to our immense surprise… it wasn’t terrible?! We were just as shocked as you were and maybe it’s just the fever talking. Check out our review and let us know what you thought.

AWESOME Adaptations: Sleepy Hollow (1999)

I can’t always make it when the podcasts get recorded on Monday, so I missed my chance to see Ed Wood with the boys – also, I wasn’t able to attend the midnight showing of Dark Shadows.  Still, listening to and watching those posts inspired me to revisit another classic Tim Burton movie that happens to hold a very special place in my heart and my movie collection…

Sleepy Hollow Poster

These two have appeared together in three different movies.

Mario Reviews Movies: The Woman in Black (2012)

Hello.

Sometimes here at Mario Likes Movies, we tend to watch movies for FUN! That’s right, this isn’t just a “job” or a “hobby”. I genuinely LIKE movies and LOVE watching them. Though those times are few and far between, I would like to share with all of you a dirty secret…

Mario Likes Movies No. 19: Ed Wood (1994)

Ed Wood!  Wait…Ed Wood?  Like, Tim Burton’s Ed Wood from 1994, starring Johnny Depp?  And Martin Landau in an incredible, Academy Award-winning turn as an aged Bela Lugosi?  But…but that’s a great movie!  This is far, FAR out of our wheelhouse, but Mario had never seen it, and so now you, gentle listener, get to turn in for a somewhat lighter podcast as we wax happy about what many of us consider Burton’s best.

American Demigods: An Introduction, and The Avengers (2012)

On our Conan the Destroyer podcast, I pontificated a bit about my love of movie heroes and the impact that they had on my upbringing and who I am as a person.  Well, with the incredible success of Joss Whedon’s The Avengers, about to be the first movie in history to make over $100 million in its second weekend, this seemed like a prime opportunity to go into a bit more depth about what these heroes, super and otherwise, mean to me, and possibly to the country, perhaps even the world.

I should start at the beginning.

Sidewalk Cinema No. 16 – Dark Shadows

Mario and Dave take a look at Tim Burton’s re-imagining of Dark Shadows starring Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, Michelle Pfeiffer, Eva Green, Johnny Lee Miller and Jackie Earle Haley. Does it stand up to the original?

Our verdict: Fans of Burton and Depp will want to check it out, but serious fans of the show should keep in mind that the two are very different.

You’ve Never Seen… UHF?!

So I’m not usually a comedy person, which explains why I never bothered to watch UHF until now. Not only that but Mario and especially Dave have been bugging me to watch it for about two weeks now which only makes me even more against the idea of watching it.  Still, I decided to watch this bad boy, if only to get them to stop bothering me about it.

Poster for UHF

Subtitled "Maybe now Dave will stop bugging me."

Mario Likes Movies No. 18: Star Slammer (1986)

I’m sorry.  I am.  Really, sincerely, dreadfully sorry.  This is a terrible movie with next to no redeeming qualities, but all of the guys actually had a lot of fun talking about the supremely terrible sci-fi women-in-prison film, “Star Slammer”.  Whatever the movie tried, it failed, but the guys drift on and off-topic and occasionally cover what made this atrocity such a steaming pile.  Tromadance, video games, and jagger rats.  Strap in.
