Remake Roundup: The Fog (2005)

Maybe it’s because I’m so bad at seeing classic movies, but I am a big fan of remakes.  I like seeing something done a new way, comparing the new version to the old and seeing a new interpretation of an existing movie.  Some people hate Hollywood’s so-called lack of originality, but I think that when done right, remakes can still be good and have merit.

(Psycho doesn’t count because it was a shot-for-shot copy of the original.)

So even though Mario and Dave said in their review of John Carpenter’s The Fog that no other version had ever been made, the film actually was remade in 2005.  And since it doesn’t fill me with the same blinding rage that they have for it, I’m going to take a look at…

The Fog vs. The Fog

A Showdown of Epic... Condensation!

Sidewalk Cinema No. 15 – The Raven

Once upon a midnight windy, three men saw a film not indy,
Made about a horror writer who one man’s wife did adore.
Once they saw it, they decided (their opinions quite divided)
A review should be provided, to tell everyone the score.
“Should I see this film?” you wonder, “Or is it a total bore?”
Watch the vid, we do implore.

Mario, Dave and Mike caught a midnight showing of The Raven starring John Cusack. Check out what they thought of the flick and see our spoiler free review after you see the trailer.

(Our verdict: if you liked Sleepy Hollow, From Hell or Sherlock Holmes, you might enjoy this dark (in tone and lighting) detective story.)

Don’t Watch This: Kaw (2007)

So in honor of The Raven which is coming out soon and which I’ll be seeing at midnight tonight, I was looking through my DVD collection and I came across a movie that looked… well, maybe not promising but at least interesting: 2007′s Kaw.

Box Art for Kaw

The box art looks pretty cool, there's NO WAY this movie can be terrible, right?

Mario Likes Movies No. 16: Bitch Slap (2009)

If you think you know all of the different euphemisms for lady parts, the 2009 female exploitation film Bitch Slap aims to prove you wrong.  With only one physical set and enough mediocre green screen to choke a killer whale, three women, who apparently have breasts, brave flashbacks, the primary cast members of Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, and seemingly endless treachery and doublecrosses to entertain you.  Sort of.  If nothing else, the usual gang of idiots mocks it incessantly.  Want to hear about Jill Valentine?  Kevin Sorbo?  Razor yo-yos?  Open your ears and strap in.
